The Cost of Quality Children’s Education in Sabah: Balancing Excellence and Affordability

Image
As parents, we all want the best for our children. We dream of providing them with quality education that equips them for a successful future. However, in Sabah—a state known for its natural beauty and cultural diversity—quality education comes at a price. Let’s delve into the challenges faced by parents and explore the cost range of ensuring a top-notch education for our little ones. The Educational Landscape in Sabah Sabah boasts a mix of public and private schools, each with its unique strengths and limitations. Here are some key aspects of the educational landscape: Public Schools : Public schools in Sabah follow the national curriculum set by the Ministry of Education. While they offer affordable education, overcrowded classrooms and limited resources can hinder personalized attention. Private Schools : Private schools provide an alternative for parents seeking smaller class sizes, better facilities, and a more holistic approach to education. However, tuition fees can be significa...

How much I spent on two dogs?

Image
For their anti flea and ticks, I am spending around RM200 for two dogs for three months. I bought these items from Harvest Fish and Pet store in Penampang near Servay.  For the vaccine, which is the 9-in-1 type. It is RM75 per dog per year.

Schooling at Chinese Primary School in Sabah.

Image
If you know Chinese or even better be excelled in it, you are in advantage of getting employed and of course to demand for higher pay as it is a specialised skill.  I am lucky to get my daughter enrolled into a Chinese Primary School (SJKC) as parents, despite not having any basic in Chinese, are fighting for places to get their children to learn the language.  My daughter's class has about 40 students cramped in the room.  I remember when I was younger, there were quite limited number of non-Chinese students in the SJKC as parents probably think it would be more convenient to send their kids to school which use their mother-tongue language.  The then syllabus, especially Chinese, was quite simple and basic for non-Chinese to follow.  Fast forward 20 years, Primary 1 students would require to remember many words, the strokes counting, the pinyin (sound) etc. Some who could not cope and could not get help will probably stress out and wors...

Is it okay for a couple opts for no children?

Image
Came across an article by The New Straits Times on "Many couples choose not to have children".  It is an interesting article that discuss at length of the reasons that married couples are looking into such direction. Briefly, reasons behind the decision include inability to conceive; hardly to survive financially even with double-income family; as well as career-oriented. What shocked me more is the article stated that besides women focusing on career, it also highlighted that a marriage institution nowadays is more to high-ranking men telling their wives "you would be lucky if you see me tonight" due to job commitment. I believe it is a tough decision for every couple when it comes to whether having or not having own kids. Another human in the family, especially minors, mean there would be more expenses incured. On today's world, where everything require money. Is it wise to have many kids? Perhaply two would be ideal or maximum for family who come fr...

Sabah Kota Kinabalu Wellness Confinement centre

Image
At this era whereby couples are living on their own, especially in the city,  they are indeed need help from someone to take care of the mother and child after the traumatising childbirth experience.  Unfortunately, not every couple has the privilege helper, mother or mother-in-law who can attend to the confinement needs due to several reason, including the availability of the help, experienced mothers have other commitment or just the bad relationship between two generations.   If paying more means happiness to new mother and child, a confinement center will serve another option for mothers to recuperate and "coping" with the arrival of bundle of joy.  The bundle of joy is not necessarily brings someone joy 24/7 as the baby also comes with several issues to deal with such as  newborn jaundice, colic, "insomnia", breastfeeding problem and etc.  Mother who had through labour also needs rest, aside from having to troubleshoot baby's ...

Sinalau Bakas, the best food in Sabah, said an Orang Putih.

Image
It is a shame that as a local, I only get interested to taste fresh Sinalau Bakas at Kampung Kelawat. A stop enroute to Kundasang from Tamparuli. Just key in Kampung kelawat in waze or google maps for the direction.  In this post, I will share my own experience having the food at the Kampung.  Meet Mariana, a local who runs the stall for the past eight years. She gets the supply from Lahad Datu.  Fresh wild boar grilled above low fire made the meat tender and fragrant.  RM20 per kilogramme.  You may choose the fatty part or lean meats. It is priced at RM20 per kilogramme. Some said the meat used to cost at RM15 per kilogramme only.  A choice of the fatty part or ribs.  I recommend to try both. The fatty part is not that "oily" as you will taste the juice oozing out as you chew them in your mouth. But, I think the rib part is even more delicious especially when you dip with soy sauce condiment.  If you...

Review on Qdees school.

Image
This post is merely on personal view of the Qdees kindergarten which I enroll my daughter in this year. The principal has recently posted in parents-teacher Whatsapp group that the franchise has been awarded SME Brand Excellence Award in Best Global Franchise Model 2016 by SME Malaysia. Well, the excellence award obviously meant for business specifically the people who want to make money from early learning institutions...the information does not really relay the significance for parents whose main concern is their children's well-being at the school.  Back to my parenting point of view, the reason I chose the school is I believe with certain standards to comply, I hope that my daughter will be taken good care of while I go to work. In short, no abuse. Image grabbed from Qdees website I paid over thousand include the monthly RM450 during registration in Dec 2016. The payment also include two (ugly) grey color uniform (with not-so-good)cloth quality, a set of...

How to survive life as a single mom with young kids.

Image
First and most important rule NEVER choose/become one unless it is unavoidable for cases like the husband is sick, a marine or serving the country and etc. As for now, I am literally a single mom who have chosen not to follow husband to peninsular Malaysia for his two years studies. Now, it has been four months (only). I have already felt the pinch of having to struggle alone in making both work, toddler and everything alright. There had been bad occassions such as earthquake, car broke down, problematic babysitter and work overloads that made myself miserable in coping and swallowing them all by myself. When I bring the toddler out and see others have both of their parents, I really hope it won't hurt my toddler who might question, "where is her daddy?" But I know I have to set formula to make me survive those perils. 1/Ask blessing, courage and protection from God.  Be at any condition, we need His help to protect and bless what we do and ...

Impression Saloon at Karamunsing complex.

Image
A friend's friend recommended this 6-seater hair saloon at Karamunsing complex to me. Gave it a try since I had my car serviced nearby the shopping complex. Upon my arrival at about  10am , the good-looking boss known as Kent welcomed me. Briefed me about the price and estimate time to do rebonding on shoulder-blade length hair. The 30-year-old Chinese boss told his female employee to do the necessary.  Unlike other typical hairdresser, this Malay woman by the name of Tina was quite soft spoken and didn't complain on my troublesome hair thickness. She just did her job as necessary. Her male colleague Kang was quite a kind person as he helped her to handle my voluminous hair. It took about 2 hours for my hair to be done. Was listening to Chinese and Malay songs played at the saloon all those while. The boss is quite responsible as he ensure quality control on every hair his staff are doing. He even uses scaling machine to measure right amount of...

Review on Nexus Karambunai Resort

Image
Booked last minute for Raya Haji public holiday via booking.com. Surprisingly, the rate was higher than making it via the resort official website. I had RM430 without breakfast, whilst the resort rate at that time was RM388 nett including breakfast. We wanted to book Raintree and Golf Beach resort which is located at the same area in sepanggar, Kota Kinabalu Sabah, as the price is around RM200 with more spacious villa and lots more beachside games compared to Nexus. I must say that Nexus Borneo seaview room offers breathtaking scene of sea with soothing music of the waves. other aspects were pretty disappointing for RM430.  I was with husband and a toddler for vacation. When the child got hurt due to the facility, it ruined our mood during the two days one night stay. The room is not carpeted, my child who toddles unsteadily fell on the hard wood and cried in pain. Although I stated in the booking that I would come with kid, but still I got a room with two HIGH single beds. How am ...
